More KY Residents Earning GED

Education officials are boasting of a 10 percent increase in the number of Kentuckians who earned GEDs over the past year.

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education reported Tuesday that more than 10,000 people received the high school equivalency certificates between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011.

The pass rate for test takers also increased from 80 percent to 83 percent.

Council for Postsecondary Education President Bob King applauded the increases, which were attributed to free GED testing offered between April and June.

Estimates are that more than 400,000 Kentuckians – 15 percent of the working-age population – still don’t have high school diplomas or GEDs.
