During a morning ceremony at the Jackson Police Department, the Mitchell family, some from as far away as Texas were on hand as half of the $5,700 was donated by the business owners to Crime Stoppers. The other $2,850 were given to a key witness in the 2009 murder. Mitchell’s widow said she hopes the money will help more witnesses come forward. “If someone has any information, it’s the right thing to do,” said Kelly Mitchell, widow of Troy Mitchell. “But this is encouragement to do that thing.” Also Wednesday, the Marine Corps League presented a $100 donation to Crime Stoppers in honor of Mitchell, who was a member of the league and a retired master sergeant of the Marine Corps.
