A Hardin County sheriff’s deputy is recovering in a Memphis hospital Thursday after he was knocked to the ground and injured while trying to make an arrest. Deputies Robert Jaggars and Matt Terry tried to arrest Antwan Patterson, 21, for drunk driving Wednesday night along Highway 57 South, just three miles from the Mississippi state line. According to investigators, Patterson cooperated with deputies at first, but when they tried to handcuff him, he resisted arrest. Sheriff Sammy Davidson said Deputy Jaggars was knocked to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement and fracturing his skull. He was injured so badly, he had to be transported to The Med in Memphis and is in intensive care. Sheriff Davidson said Deputy Terry was finally able to handcuff Patterson and arrest him, but the situation was still scary. “It is always that possibility you hope it never happens, but then your life’s on the line every time that you go to work and you pull somebody over because you never know when they’re going to resist,” Davidson said. Patterson has been charged with a DUI, assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license. He is being held in the Hardin County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
