Lambuth residents worked Sunday to prepare to welcome students to the first day of classes at the University of Memphis at Lambuth. “Lots of excitement, lots of excitement,” said Lori Silver, executive director of the Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association. LANA representatives worked putting blue ribbons on residents’ mailboxes leading up to the campus. Silver said they will be on campus Monday providing candy and pizza to show their appreciation to students. She said LANA representatives will work the front desk while UofM staff are in training. “It feels like a breath of fresh air. We had so much doom and gloom with the uncertainty of Lambuth’s future,” said Councilman Scott Conger of Jackson. Councilman Conger said the city is excited to have a public higher education institution. He said what happens Monday is the result of two years of efforts from the UofM, Lambuth residents, and city officials. “It will keep students in the Jackson area, so that’s a good thing, not to mention the old Lambuth facility will be used for something good,” said LANA resident, Matthew Pinckard. Pinckard said new students in the area will bring energy and excitement to the community. “Obviously we’ll have a number of people from the neighborhood coming out and participating in greeting,” said LANA Treasurer Jenci Spradilin. Spradilin said while there will be no formal ceremony Monday, a formal dedication will be held later in the fall when the acquisition of the campus is completed.
