Child Crushed by Television Makes Amazing Recovery

Brooklyn Barton gets a helmet check and a pep talk from her mom before she goes to bat. It was two years ago that the nine-year-old was crushed by a television as she got ready for softball practice, suffering severe head trauma. “It brings tears because as we were going to get dressed, this is where we were supposed to be,” said Jenny Barton, Brooklyn’s mother. Instead, Brooklyn spent three weeks in LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, enduring life-saving surgeries and treatment. While most of her scars have healed, doctors say Brooklyn’s vocal chords are currently paralyzed. “We’re going to wait at least a year and go back,” said Jenny. “Then they’ll decide if they’re going to split them and tie them off, or they’ll leave them the same.” Brooklyn is able to speak, but sometimes finds herself short of breath. However, watching her hit and field, you’d hardly know it. “She has to have a designated runner if she gets really short winded,” said Barton. “When we started our season, she was running to 1st base and getting a player, but now she’s running every base.” “She’s always willing to do whatever you ask her to do,” said Brooklyn’s softball coach, Julianne Trimmer. “She’s very determined. She never quits. She never even wants to take a break – you have to make her take a break.” But there has been no breaks in her miraculous recovery. “She has fought every step of the way to get to where she’s at today,” said Jenny Barton. “Of course it still makes me emotional just to know that my child could have not been on this field where we stand today. But she is here and we’re loving every minute of it. God has something in store for her that we never knew He would have.” Brooklyn was recently cleared from any surgeries for the next two years.
