Child Safety Seat Check
Even if your children are in car seats, they still can be hurt in a wreck, if you have not installed the car seats properly. Insuring proper placement of child car seats was the goal of a drive-through car seat inspection station hosted by the Jackson Police Department as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week. Properly installed child car seats can reduce the risk of injury or even death by 71 percent for children under the age of one and by 54 percent for children between one and four years old. ‘This is all about safety for our children a lot of times the seats are not installed correctly, said Lisa Silver of Jackson Oaks Retirement Center, the site of the child car seat check. And if there’s an accident it could actually do harm to the children.” In 2009, federal statistics indicated more than 750 children under the age of 12 were killed in traffic crashes. Among those, 42 percent were unrestrained.
