A South Side High School senior is among an elite group of high school students in the country. Elizabeth Standfield has been named a semifinalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. She is the only student in the Jackson-Madison County School System to receive this prestigious honor. She will find out if she has won a National Merit Scholarship in the spring. Standfield admits being nominated is a very big deal to her. “Going to a public school, I was worried that maybe colleges wouldn’t recognize the work I’ve done. So this is a good way to quantify what I’ve done,” said Standfield. Elizabeth says she is considering maybe the medical field or teaching as a possible course of study. “I’m just interested in what college will push me into,” she said. Standfield says she has applied to Harvard, Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee.
