AARP Safe Driving Course
Madison County leads the state with the highest number of crashes involving drivers 65-years and older. Tuesday, area law enforcement leaders were busy working to lower that statistic. Officials with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson Police Department held an AARP Driver Safety Class. The classes use an interactive lecture with video to prepare mature drivers to deal with today’s traffic challenges. The course instructor says even the best drivers can get rusty with age. “It slows our reaction time,” said Edward Wilson. “It takes away our peripheral vision, our depth perception, our vision, our hearing, it all decreases as we get older and we don’t realize it as it happens.” The class will resume at 8:30 a.m. at the Police Training Annex. The course is open to the public. AARP members can take the course for $12. Non-members are charged $14.
