Is the Postal Service Still Needed?
Several U.S. Postal Service Workers rallied in front of Congressman Stephen Fincher’s office in downtown Jackson Tuesday in effort to save their jobs. They also asked that West Tennesseans join with them in their fight. Some postal users told us using the post office has become too much of an inconvenience for them. They say most of the things they used to rely on the post office for, like mailing letters and bills, they can now do online. Jackson resident Jami Grogan says she hardly ever uses postal services. “If I get like invitations and stuff like that, I’ll send like thank you cards through snail mail but that’s about it,” said Grogan. However, Lane College Professor Dr. David S. Points believes the U.S. Postal Service provides more security and should be used more often. “I still use the check, drop it in the mail and hope it gets there. And it does get there and I’m satisfied. And that equates to security. So, I’m secure in using the U.S. Postal Service,” said Dr. Points. In a written statement in regards to Tuesday’s rally USPS Communications Director David Walton had this to say, “These are challenging times for the Postal Service and its employees as we work to make the necessary changes to our business model that will provide mail service for the nation for many decades to come.”
