Sewer Problems in Gadsden
It has not rained around Gadsden in days yet standing water is visible in plenty of locations, yes raw sewage. Residents say when their toilet is flushed it goes into the neighbors yard or runs into a ditch and they say it’s been happening for years. Resident Janet Smith said, “What I don’t understand is we live in the United States of America we are not living in Africa. We are not living anywhere else. And, yes, I am angry that we do not have a city government that does not want to do anything about it”. The smell of the sewage is not the only problem. Neighbors say a house was condemned because of the sewage problem. “The children get into the ditches and play. The children are actually playing in raw sewage which is a health hazard,” said Smith. Gadsden Mayor Steve Self said he is in the process of looking into the problem but he said there is no quick fix. He also steered clear of addressing how much it could cost to install a city-wide sewer system.
