Job Creation Claims Questioned

Gov. Steve Beshear’s campaign cannot provide proof that his administration created or retained more than 19,500 jobs in Kentucky, despite ads and press releases laying claim to the positions.

Hundreds of jobs that the Democratic governor cites on his campaign Web site have not been created since the initial announcements, or were partially offset when the companies did subsequent layoffs.

Beshear campaign spokesman Matt Erwin told The Lexington Herald-Leader and The Courier-Journal that the claims are accurate. Erwin says Beshear’s administration has approved incentives to create 19,000 jobs and save 7,000 more. Erwin says if the companies did not create the jobs, they didn’t get the incentives.

Beshear faces a challenge from state Senate President David Williams and independent Gatewood Galbraith on the November ballot.
