Juvenile Charged In Weekend Murder in Humboldt
Humboldt Police have made an arrest in the weekend fatal shooting. A 17-year-old boy has been charged with first degree murder and one drug count. According to Police,Lonzell Smith, 22, was shot and killed in front of a Humboldt residence located in the 500 block of South 18th Avenue. Police responded to a call at around 12:30, Sunday morning. When they arrived, they found Smith’s body lying lifelessly on the front porch with multiple gunshot wounds. Smith worked as a mechanic in Jackson. Those that knew him best say he was a good guy who stayed out of trouble. “”He was a good young man, a hard working young man. And whatever he wanted, he worked for it,” said Smith’s mother, Sarah Smith. One neighbor said he was shocked that a shooting happened in what he calls his quiet Humboldt neighborhood. “I heard gun shots, then I went out on to the porch and he was laying out on the porch dead,” said neighbor Gordon Swanger. Smith was engaged to be married. Police said the suspect is in custody awaiting his detention hearing in Gibson County Juvenile Court.
