Greenfield Focuses on Fire Prevention Week
Paying rural fire subscription fees has been a hot topic for a while. Local fire chiefs continue to stress to residents the importance of having a rural fire subscription, and the sooner they pay for it..the chances are better they won’t wind up a victim of a sudden fall fire. Greenfield is having their 23rd annual “Fire Prevention Festival” this week. In observance of “National Fire Prevention Week” next week, along with fire safety tips all week and daily activities, fire officials hope rural west Tennesseans understand how important and vital paying your subscription fee is to your local fire department. “I encourage you to support those fire departments, pay your annual fee, and the insurance company will pay the normal fee when the fire department does respond, that’s a normal policy. If you don’t pay the fee, there will be an inflated fee we will charge when we come,” said Greenfield’s Fire Chief, Bob Dudley Rural fire subscription fees range from $75-$100. All cities enforce the same policies but collect the fees at different times. Fire officials said it is a small fee when you take into consideration manpower, fuel, mutual aid, maintenance, and the amount of money it takes to operate a fire department. It might be a gamble to pay for a service you may never need, but when a tragedy like a fire happens, it may cost you thousands of dollars. “It’s an insurance policy, you take a gamble if you don’t buy it, you take a gamble if you do but it, you may not need it, that’s what you pay for, like an insurance policy” said Chief Dudley.
