Jackson police have confirmed Daphne Rose Kenner, 18, of Jackson, was shot and killed. They say Tray Chaney, 18, of Jackson, was the one who pulled the trigger, Tuesday afternoon. A 21-year-old male passenger in Kenner’s car was also shot and seriously injured. According to investigators, Chaney intentionally ran into Kenner’s vehicle as she drove along Old Hickory Blvd. around 2:15 p.m. Officers say she pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 500 block, only to have Chaney emerge from his own car and shoot her and her passenger. As he fled, Chaney is accused of running into a car as he drove near Wallace Rd. and Shady Lane. At that point, investigators say he stopped a silver van and carjacked the couple inside. The female victim said he did allow her to get her infant before he took off in their vehicle. Metro Narcotics Investigator Nathaniel Shoate was in the area and engaged in a chase. Chaney led Deputy Shoate and other officers in pursuit to a home on West Park Place. Witnesses and officers say the suspect got out and ran into the home pausing only to shoot at the officers. Inside the house, investigators say, Deputy Shoate fired one shot hitting Chaney. He suffered a graze would to his scalp. Charges are pending upon his release from the hospital. Chaney told officers, Kenner was his “girlfriend.” The male passenger in his car has been airlifted to The Med in Memphis. Investigators say they do not believe anyone else was involved in the shootings and that Chaney is their only suspect. Deputy Shoate has been placed on routine administrative leave.
