Chaney Booked into Madison County Jail

Murder, shooting and carjacking suspect Tray Chaney, 18, of Jackson, was booked into the Madison County Jail around 6:45 p.m., Thursday. Investigators transported Chaney from Western Mental Health Institute in Bolivar following his release earlier in the day. An arrest warrant for Chaney was issued on a number of charges. They are first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, felony evading arrest and possession of a weapon during a dangerous felony. On Tuesday, Chaney is accused of using his car to run into the vehicle of his estranged girlfriend Daphne Kenner, 18, of Jackson. Police said she pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex on Old Hickory Blvd. around 2:15 p.m. Chaney is believed to have gotten out and shot Kenner and a 21-year-old male passenger in her car. Kenner died at the scene. The passenger remains hospitalized at a Memphis hospital. As of late Thursday, he was reported in stable condition. From the scene on Old Hickory Blvd., Chaney is accused of wrecking his own vehicle then carjacking a family near Wallace Rd. and Shady Lane. Officers pursued Chaney from that location to his mother’s home on West Park Place near downtown Jackson. Officers followed Chaney on foot as he ran into the house, where shots were fired. Chaney suffered a graze wound to the head.
