A Medina grandmother’s Halloween tradition turned into a frightening fire Thursday night. Medina, Gibson County, and Milan fire departments responded to a call on the 200-block of Blackman Street at around 9 p.m. “I saw like flames coming out that window and then when I ran over here the window had popped the glass, and it was so loud,” said grandson Caleb McCaslin. McCaslin stated he was on his way to his mother’s house when he saw thick smoke pouring out from the front bedroom. “My grandmother, she irons my clothes. So I was going to get my clothes and I saw the house was on fire and I started looking an flames,” stated McCaslin. Family members said the grandmother always carved pumpkins with her grandchildren. “We carved pumpkins just last weekend and when we carved them..J.B. had carved the pumpkin face and he loved his pumpkin so we set it in the window,” said McCaslin. Officials said that is when the fire started. “He came in the living room where they were and said there was a fire in the bedroom. They went in there and the curtain were on fire,” said Medina Fire Chief Jeff Rollins. According to fire officials, the grandmother attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but it was not enough. No one was hurt. Officials stated the home is not habitable and could take up to six months to fix.
