Deputies Learn the Danger of Traffic Stops
Following the recent deadly shootout involving THP Deputy Dwayne Stanford, local law enforcement officials are learning just how to act if a traffic stop turns violent. The Henderson Sheriff’s Department teamed up with Decatur County to practice traffic stops as part of their 40 hour yearly in-service training, Thursday afternoon. Since Trooper Stanford is from Henderson County, many of the deputies know him personally, and said they are taking training a lot more to heart this year. Deputies practiced how to approach every scenario from writing speeding tickets, to DUI arrests, to violent shootouts much like the one Trooper Stanford encountered. “This training is designed to show our weak spots, teach new ways maybe to be a little safer, just basically to get out of the compliance that we sometimes get into,” said Henderson County Sheriff Brian Duke. Sheriff Duke also said that last week deputies in training had the privilege of talking with Trooper Stanford when he came to speak to the class about his experience.
