Carnathan Appears on Federal Bank Robbery Charge

A Mississippi man accused of robbing a Selmer bank then losing all the cash at casinos in Tunica made his first appears in U.S. District Court, Monday. Joseph Carnathan, 40, of Mooreville, Miss., was first arrested on a state charge of aggravated robbery. However, he was indicted on a stronger robbery charge brought in a federal indictment. During his appearance, Monday, Judge Ed Bryant appointed Carnathan a public defender. Investigators say on Sept. 13, Carnathan walked into the Southbank in Selmer and walked out with a lot of cash. He was on the run for a week before officers say his nephew spotted the surveillance pictures on one of our newscasts and alerted the Lee County, Miss. Sheriff’s Department.
