Some Hardeman County residents are not happy about recent cuts in the county’s budget, which have led to a reduction in the days of operation for the county’s garbage convenience centers. “There were some mismanaging of funds as it relates to not really having a need to be open five days,” said Mayor Willie Spencer of Hardeman County. He was referring to the county’s recent decision to reduce the days of operation from five to two days a week . “Me and my daughter walk every night and we pick up garbage as we’re walking and put it in a bag,” said Hardeman County resident, Melinda Huntress. Huntress said she believes the reduction in county services have led to increased littering. “They just go down the street throwing cups and containers,” she adds. Some residents are fearful the changes will encourage more illegal garbage dumping, an issue Hardeman County Mayor Willie Spencer said is already a problem in the county. “We’ve been working with those as they’re reported to us,” he said. Mayor Spencer said the issue of illegal garbage dumping was a problem long before the county made reductions to the budget. He said the county is working with the sheriff’s department to track down offenders who dump garbage illegally. He said the county is working to make the garbage convenience centers more convenient for citizens. “We’re moving all the centers around in the county where all the centers are not closed at the same time,” he adds.
