Pit Falls Of Social Media
After the suspension of a Madison County Deputy for posting details of work-related activities on his private Facebook page, 7 Eyewitness News took a look at how to protect your personal social networking. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and Google + have become a part of everyday life. “I use it to keep up with friends and staying in touch with people I have lost contact with over the years,” said high school senior Emily Browder. But what happens at home on a personal social networking site can affect you at the work place. “If they do indicate something about their employer, then of course that is something that should be discussed between the employer and employee,” said social media user Regina McCormick. One Union University media professor said it is important to talk to your employer about social networking policies. “People are shocked about where their privacy settings are set. You have a lot of control with Facebook, Twitter, Google + about who can see what,” said Professor Ashley Blair. Blair stated employers technically cannot go in to check personal pages without the employees permission but can ask for access to information during the hiring process. “Now you’re in a professional situation where there are things you can say and can not say. Sometimes its hard to remember when you’re alone on your computer,” stated Blair.
