Veterans Seek Employment Guidance
A former marine has dedicated his life to serving others from the battlefield and now in Jackson along with dozens of other veterans were honored at Rose Hill Middle School, Friday afternoon. Students and officials such as Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist and Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris came out to honor veterans like Alex Jones. Former Marine Alex Jones served for nearly 20 years, but that has not kept him from serving his community in another way. “You’ve created a brotherhood in there. Your life depends on the person beside you, whether it’s male or female. You’ve got to appreciate each other and take care of each other and love each other,” said Department of Veterans Affairs employee Alex Jones. Life after war can be a battle itself for veterans returning to civilian life. Jones spends his days assisting veterans and the families of veterans. “It’s very rewarding, especially with the young marines and veterans coming out of service now with the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. It’s good to help those veterans out,” said Jones. The department helps with job health care, educational benefits, and even job placement. This comes at a great time with recent reports showing veteran unemployment rates at 12 percent. Jones said it is important for veterans to know their options. If you know any veteran that needs assistance, call him at (731) 421-5026.
