Bowling Green Politicians Swap Places

Bowling Green’s new mayor has been sworn in, and the man he defeated has been appointed to fill the mayor’s old seat on the city commission.

As soon as Bruce Wilkerson was sworn in as mayor Tuesday night and the commission meeting started, he asked the commissioners to vote to appoint Joe Denning to a seat on the commission, the Daily News reported. Denning was appointed mayor in February, soon after Elaine Walker was appointed secretary of state.

Wilkerson says Denning was elected in 2010 for a two-year term but filled the mayor’s office when Walker left, so it was logical to have him back on the commission, where voters sent him initially.

Denning has been on the commission for 17 years and was only off for about a half-hour before the commission voted to appoint him back to it.
