Islamic Center Responds to Representative’s Comments
The Muslim community in Jackson is outraged and plan to take action after Tennessee State Representative Rick Womick’s comments stating the U.S. should purge its military of Muslims. Dr. Ahmad said Womick’s views are unfair and paint Muslims in a bad light. He said it discredits the work of so many Muslim men and women who have served and protected America. Ahmad said the Islamic Jackson Center board will meet in the coming days to discuss how to address Womick. They plan to link up with other Islamic Centers to prepare a letter to Womick and other state officials. “I don‘t trust one Muslim in our military” and “if they truly are a devout Muslims, and follow the Quran and the Sunnah, then I feel threatened because they‘re commanded to kill me.” When asked if Muslims should be forced out of the military, Womick responded “Absolutely, yeah,” said Womick. Dr. Omar Ahmad, president of the Islamic Center in Jackson is calling for action. He stated Muslims have been trying to clear their view in the public eye ever since the September 11 attacks. He states State Rep. Womick has taken the Quran out of context, and that those verses strictly deal with war and not a time of peace. “We seek nothing but peace from other Americans, and his statements are out of context and little ridiculous with statements that cause fear mongering,” said Ahmad.
