Thursday marked the 36th annual Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It is a day set aside by the group to encourage smokers to begin a plan to quit or stop altogether. Organizers hope that by doing so, smokers will take an important step toward a healthier life. Medical experts said tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. It is estimated more than 45 million Americans are smokers. “So, if you’ve not made a plan to, this would be a great day to take that initiative and make a plan for yourself to improve health as well as the family and friends and co-workers around you,” said Susan Barker, social worker of the Kirkland Cancer Center. Because quitting is extremely difficult, the American Cancer Society said you have a better chance at stopping if you have a little help and encouragement.
