New Lake County Drug Unit Seeing Results

Separation from a West Tennessee Drug Task Force has one local community forming its own drug unit and ramping up its fight against illegal substances. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department established its Drug Strike team; as a result of the West Tennessee Drug Task Force pulling out of the county after more than 10 years. Officials said it was a mutual agreement. “They were headed in a different direction than we needed, being a small county, we just couldn’t afford to send officers to Memphis or I-40 to work with the task force,” says Chief Deputy Jason Allison. Authorities said immediately after parting ways, they established the Drug strike Team to continue battling the drug problem in their county. Records show 11 search warrants, 16 drug related arrests, $6,000 in drug funds seized, six vehicles seized, and amounts of powder and crack cocaine, marijuana, meth, and prescription pills have been removed from the streets. Many residents said they have noticed drug activity slowing down quite a bit. “I think they’ve done a wonderful job. We’re seeing a lot more drug arrests, I’ve been here all my life and I know it’s been an uphill battle, but they seem to be doing a great job,” says resident, Mike Hamra.
