Flooding Closes Arkansas Interstate

Arkansas highway officials have closed a major interstate highway between Little Rock and Dallas because of major flooding.

Heavy rains Monday morning pushed streams out of their banks on the southwest side of Little Rock, leading the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department to close Interstate 30 near the Alexander Road exit. Highways spokesman Randy Ort says the usual detour around the area, Arkansas Highway 5, is also flooded.

Ort suggested that traffic divert via Malvern and Sheridan. Portions of that route are only two lanes wide.

Interstate 30 is a major connector between Memphis, Tenn., and Dallas. The route connects the eastern United States and the Southwest.

Monday’s closure was due to flash floods. River flooding in eastern Arkansas in the spring shut down Interstate 40 for several days.
