TN College Buys XXX Website Domains

It may seem counterintuitive, but Columbia State Community College has purchased several .xxx websites in order to protect its reputation.

The idea is that the purchase prevents others from setting up pornographic websites at addresses like columbiastate.xxx and chargers.xxx – a reference to the school’s mascot.

Emily Siciensky is associate vice president of information technology at Columbia. She told The Daily Herald the school spent about $1,000 acquiring eight domain names to prevent others from using them.

Although the general public cannot purchase the .xxx domains until Dec. 6, colleges and other official organizations were given a sunrise period. More than 80,000 applications were received.

Applicants include Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
