Road Conditions May Deteriorate
As West Tennessee gets more snow and the temperatures drop, the roads get more dangerous. “We do see more accidents whenever the character of the roadway changes, but when it gets slick by ice, that’s probably the most dangerous time,” said Lt. Jerry Elston of the, Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Carinsurance.com even claims nearly 70 percent of deaths in the winter are from car accidents in ice and snow. But Lt. Elston said the good news is the wrecks usually are not that serious – at least not in Madison County. “As drivers are driving slower because of this, the accidents are less prone to have injury,” Elston said. But officers said you should drive slowly and defensively regardless. Watch for ice, leave enough space between cars and do not slam on your brakes. Jackson-Madison County school officials said they look at these road conditions when deciding if they will cancel classes. “We’re looking at overpasses, bridges and roads out in the county, in the outer area of the county, to see how they are affected by the accumulation,” said Grant Ward, Jackson-Madison County School District. Ward said there are 13 snow days set aside for this school year. School officials said they will notify parents about any school closings by phone, on the district’s website and through the media.
