Bob Newhart Speaks at FHU Benefit Dinner
More than $1.3 million dollars was raised during the annual Benefit Dinner at Freed-Hardemen University in Henderson, Friday night. More than 2,000 were in attendance to hear nationally-known actor and comedian, Bob Newhart. Newhart is known for his stand-up routines and comedy recordings as well as the star of the 1970s TV series “The Bob Newhart Show” and the 1980s and 1990s sitcom “Newhart”. He was the keynote speaker for this year’s benefit dinner, using his brand of humor to help raise money for university scholarships. Newhart said, even though he enjoys acting in TV and movies, stand-up comedy is his first love. “I have a pretty good idea what I’m going to do to tonight, but I could all of a sudden say, I think I’ll go here and you just don’t have that freedom in a TV show and certainly in a movie,” said Newhart. “It is an immediate gratification from the audience. It’s an adrenaline.” University leaders said nearly 85 percent of Freed-Hardeman student body will benefit from the scholarship money raised at the dinner.
