The Camden community is livid, and it’s not only the smell, but the health risks they face which has them blaming the state. The continuing battle between the city of Camden and the EWS, Environmental Waste System, has been going on for more than a year, but recent events have residents in an uproar, and stated the state of Tennessee is not on their side. The aluminum landfill that Camden residents state has been releasing this ammonia smell, for more than a year, is potent. The unoccupied landfill was taken over by an aluminum waste plant in 2010, and has continued to grow, even after contacting the state. The aluminum is piled up and covered with clay and gravel, which is supposed to keep moisture from reaching the aluminum, which causes ammonia to be released. The citizens were told by the governor the cell would be done with in December, but instead, the landfill is going to be expanded.
