A Trenton business owner decided to defend his livelihood by taking on a man who breaks in to his shop. It all happened Wednesday night after the business closed, and the suspect is still on the loose. Trenton Police Chief Will Sanders said owner Jerry Callis was still in the back room of his business counting money, when he heard a noise. Chief Sanders said the suspect broke the glass door of Trenton’s “Party Shop”. On the surveillance video it appears the suspect goes behind the counter to steal something. That is when Callis said he came around the corner and saw the burglar. Immediately, holding him at gunpoint, Callis ordered the young man to get on the floor. “He changed from a big guy to a little guy, said Callis “He started crying, ‘please, don’t shoot me, please don’t shoot me, somebody set me up.'” The video showed the suspect obeying Callis’ order and gets on the floor. “I was trying to make him stay on the floor so I could reach the button to get the police here,” said Callis. “The individual gets up and runs out the door, the owner then starts after him and fires one shot in the direction that he ran,” said Chief Sanders. Chief Sanders said the suspect was last seen running north on Highway 45 Bypass in Trenton. Police need help in finding the attempted burglar. He is a young, white, man at least 6 feet tall. Investigators said he is a rather large man, weighing between 250 to 275 pounds. A reward is being offered for any information about the suspect, or who he may be. If you have information call Trenton Police at (731) 855-1413 or Gibson County Crime Stoppers at (731) 855-2005.
