Man Faces Sex Crimes Charges
A routine traffic stop on Interstate 40 in Haywood County quickly turned into an arrest of a Texas man on several sex crimes charges. A state trooper said after pulling the vehicle over, he observed a 40-year-old male and a 16-year-old male, who appeared nervous and who gave conflicting stories about their travels. A call to the Memphis police department’s sex crimes unit indicated the two may have been involved in criminal activity that occurred in Memphis early Sunday morning. Further investigation revealed the 16-year-old juvenile passenger was reported as a runaway from the Dallas area. Authorities have arrested Steven Geer, 40, and charged him with especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, aggravated statutory rape, and criminal exposure to HIV. He is being held in the Shelby County Jail. The juvenile is in protective custody and will be released to his parents.
