Milan Mayor Says New Jobs May Come To Town
The mayor of Milan may have just been re-elected last week, but he already has a big year ahead of him, hinting some new jobs may be on the way for residents of the city and county. Mayor Crider told 7 Eyewitness News that Milan is going to have a busy 2012 and they just started talking to an employer who could be headed to the Gibson County city. An unnamed company is looking to move into Milan’s empty Tower Automotive building that has been closed since August 2007. Crider said the move could bring 200 jobs into the building that was once used to produce auto parts for several car companies. “We’re very excited. We’re very hopeful that that deal will get done,” Mayor Crider said. The mayor could not reveal much about the deal yet because it is still in the works, but said next year will be big for Milan regardless. “Not only are we going to repave those high traffic streets, but they’re going to include sidewalks and bike lanes, which is new for Milan,” Crider said. According to Mayor Crider, the city will be getting all new traffic lights thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. But Mayor Crider said the biggest project, at least for now , is the downtown revitalization project which they have been talking about since Mayor Crider first took office four years ago. He said It is basically a makeover for Main Street. “It’s going to have new utilities underground, new street lights, street scape, greenery…..(and) paving. It’s going to look great down here,” he said. That is just the first part of the project according to Mayor Crider. “Part two’s the same thing, it just expands it out a little bit more,” Mayor Crider said. “It gets a couple more streets like Williamson and Front.” On top of that, he said Milan High School will be getting a school resource officer and the chamber of commerce will be getting its own building. Mayor Crider said they hope to start working on phase one of the downtown project in the spring. He did not say when an announcement about the new jobs could come.
