Gun Sales Set Holiday Record
Last month guns shot off store shelves. Sales were strong at many Jackson gun stores. “We sold a bunch during December. Everything was so busy during that week,” said William Watt, who works for Direct Hit. According to the FBI on December 23, 100,000 background checks were ordered. The second all-time day for gun buying. The most guns were sold a day after Thanksgiving this past year when 130,000 background checks were ordered. “We sold a lot of guns on Black Friday and from Black Friday on to the 23 we sold a lot of guns,” said Watt. The most popular gun last month at Direct Hit in south Jackson was a small frame 38. It was popular with men buying it for wives and for themselves. According to local gun shop employees people were buying guns for self-protection not to play out scenes from the wild west. “I don’t think people just want to go out and enforce the law or do anything like that. I just think that they realize that they have to be able to defend themselves and not depend on someone else to do it for them,” Watt said. This was a December to remember for gun shops in the Jackson area. “There were probably 20 people or more just waiting and wanting to look at guns. I noticed there were a lot of TBI background checks going on the same time I was running them,” said Watt.
