Wreck Injures City Councilman Buchanan
A violent and fiery crash sent a Jackson city councilman to the hospital Tuesday, where his family said he is in stable condition. Late Tuesday morning, councilman Harvey Buchanan wrecked his car in north Jackson, where he had to be cut from the vehicle after Good Samaritans rushed to his aid and extinguished flames that shot from his car. Police said Buchanan ran into a metal utility pole as he was heading south on Highland Avenue. “I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do,” said neighbor Nancy Steele. “I’ve been calling some of the neighbors and letting them know what I’d heard and so he’ll be in all our prayers, we’ll keep the whole family in our prayers.” Family members said Buchanan, who has been on the council for more than 16 years, suffered a fractured ankle and a cut on his head that required surgery. At last report, he was listed in stable condition, though his family said they do not know when he could be released. Neighbors said they hope he will pull through, and soon. “He’s a Christian person so he will, with the good Lord’s help he will pull through it,” Steele said. They said they can always depend on Buchanan to do things for their community. “I just wish the best for him,” said neighbor Mace Payne. “He’s a wonderful person and I just really hope that everything works out all right. He has a lovely family. They’re good neighbors and he has been an excellent councilman.” Police said they still do not know what caused Buchanan to crash, and that the accident is still under investigation.
