At Sacred Heart of Jesus High School do not look for books, paper or pencils. “Through the iPads everything can be taught, reading, writing arithmetic,” said Robin Perry, the school academic dean. “It’s a big switch for us, but I think a lot of us are getting used to that,” said Freshman Alaina Graham. “We don’t use pen and paper very often anymore, but we can always go back to it.” The 21st Century Program incorporates every aspect of technology. The iPad2 is used in the teaching of science, math and literature. “They will be introduced to the iPad in college so we thought it would be a good idea for them to get a head start on it so they would be prepared to use it to further their education,” said Kristy Sherrod, who teaches at Sacred Heart. All 60 students were given iPads. Students paid a technology fee of $500. Once they graduate they get to keep the iPads and use them in college. Dean Hunt is a senior at Sacred Heart. “I feel like when you go to college and you have the professor talking he will be giving a lot of notes a lot of homework and the key to college is organizing, keeping it all together. Students who are slow readers or spellers will benefit from numerous apps, including Learning Ally an app that includes information from all of the text books. Robin Perry said, “It increases the self esteem. They no longer struggle to the point of feeling that they are overwhelmed with the work or overwhelmed with the assignments.” “We have apps on the ipads such as Dragon Dictation which they can record a lecture from a teacher and the lecture is typed out for them, ” said Sherrod.
