Hundreds of church goers from North Mississippi and West Tennessee gathered in Jackson Saturday to reach out to those in need. Volunteers said they came to the North Mississippi-West Tennessee Federation because they love children, and want to share their love of Christ. More than 700 volunteers from 22 churches in Jackson, Memphis and North Mississippi got together Saturday with one goal in mind. “Our mission was to do as many outreach programs as possible in the Jackson area. Our desire is to make a difference with the youth,” said Service Coordinator Demetra Scruggs. The volunteers split up into five groups. They visited nursing homes, fed the needy at RIFA, and prepared care packages for the Red Cross. “We just like to make a difference in someone’s life, so that they do know that they are loved and they can be great in Jesus Christ,” Scruggs said. At the Dream Center, they read to the children, helped them with arts and crafts, and performed skits. “And the parents are loving it because it takes them away from the children for just a little while,” Scruggs said. Volunteers said they love spending time with the kids too. “I love children and that’s my passion, so it just makes me feel good, like I’m doing something, I have a purpose,” volunteer Jewel Scruggs said. Organizers told 7 Eyewitness News they are planning to do a similar outreach program like Saturday’s at least one more time this year.
