Kentucky Examines Painkiller Prescriptions
Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway is calling for closer monitoring and tighter registration for doctors who prescribe painkillers.
Conway, speaking Thursday in Lexington at a conference on prescription drug abuse, said one way to stop people from crossing state lines to obtain prescription painkillers illegally is for states to share information about how often the pills are prescribed.
Conway spoke with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who said Florida has seen a significant drop in the number of pain clinics since passing legislation tightening the requirements for prescribing painkillers.
Bondi said the number of pain clinics in Florida has fallen from 943 before the legislation passed last year to 518 today.
Law enforcement officials have said up to 60 percent of Kentucky’s illicit pills may come from Florida.
