Local middle school students are being given a chance to again take part in a national campaign to stop violence. The Jackson and Madison County students are examining the impact of violence on their lives during classroom discussions and in written form by writing about the causes and solutions to youth violence. For many young people, middle school years can prove to be difficult and challenging. The effort gives them a chance to make personal commitments to do something about the problem, not only in their schools, but also in their homes and neighborhoods. “Kids at this age often times won’t share their thoughts or emotions with their peers because they feel that they will, it will make them stand out or they will appear to be different in some way,” said Tracey Vowell, principal of Parkway Middle School. “When students are given the opportunity to put their thoughts into writing, that barrier is broken and they’re able to express themselves.” According to Councilman Brooks over 2,000 7th and 8th graders have accepted the challenge during the last four years. After their writings are evaluated, the top 10 boys and girls will be honored during a local recognition banquet.
