West KY Coal Mine Debated
The future of a western Kentucky coal mine remains up in the air after planners in Owensboro split over whether to allow the project.
The Owensboro Metropolitan Planning Commission’s two tie votes Thursday night came after testimony from groups including mine backers and Girl Scouts.
The proposed mine would be on about 385 acres and within a half-mile of the Pennyroyal Girl Scout Camp.
Commission attorney Madison Silvert told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer that the 10-member panel has 30 days to break the tie or the issue goes to the Daviess County Fiscal Court (http://bit.ly/whc6Dv ).
Girl Scout cadets and Brownies urged the commission not to allow the mining to take place.
Western Kentucky Minerals said it will provide economic benefits to the community through jobs and coal severance taxes.
