UT Ag Center Testing New Irrigation Method

One field at the UT Ag and Research Center in Jackson is a test plot for what ag experts said will improve the way moisture is retained in row crops. The unique method being tried at the UT Ag Center for Research and Education in Jackson features irrigation hose that is buried. Ag experts said the hose is buried beneath the field in hopes of retaining more water at the root system. “Sub-irrigation is probably healthier for the plant in that its a more consistent water cycle, said Ginger Trice Rowsey, of the UT Institute of Agriculture. “It’s also conserving water more efficiently and its reducting run-off of the soil.” Researchers said they hope the method will increase productivity and same farmers money.
