A drainage ditch in Madison County is not only causing concern for some homeowners, but they are afraid someone could get seriously hurt. Residents are worried that the ditch which floods when it rains poses a danger to the children in the neighborhood. They say the culvert began caving in about three years ago and since then residents have asked the county to do something about it. But county officials said the culvert is on private property and because of that, they legally can not work on it. “As much as we would like to be able to help the property owner, the laws don’t allow for us to work, perform road work outside the road right-of-way,” Bart Walls of the Madison Co. Highway Department. “It’s very dangerous for the kids, you know kids are very curious these day, if they go to the edge of that ditch and it’s we, you know, the ground is going to give and they’re going to fall off in that ditch and cause some severe injuries,” said Kenneth Love, a Madison County resident. Residents said the ditch used to be even with the road but now is about 5-feet-deep.
