Assistant Fire Chief Speaks about Downtown Fire

Now that the flames are out, the task begins to determined exactly what caused the devastation. Fire investigators said it appears hot work by roofing crews may have sparked the late morning fire. It took eight units and more than 45 firefighters about three hours to get the flames under control. And it was not just the old First Baptist Church building that demanded fire crews’ attention. “This fire contributed to the fire in three other buildings: the Wolfe Building down the street, the police annex , the Casey Building right here, said Assistant Chief David Dillingham of the Jackson Fire Department. “It sparked a car fire down on Baltimore and a grass fire down on Chester Street.” Dillingham said the Casey Building had some internal damage, but there was only damage to the outside of the JPD Annex Building and Wolfe Communications. Off-duty Jackson Firefighters as well as Madison County firefighters helped to make sure all Jackson Fire Departments were manned throughout the day.
