The late morning fire that destroyed the old First Baptist Church building in downtown Jackson also caused some damage to the Casey Building next door to the church. Stored in the basement of the building were items to be auctioned off in this year’s 14th annual Fur Ball to benefit the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society. As a result officials with the Humane Society said roughly 80 percent of the items were damaged at an estimated loss of $20,000. Organizers said it is a huge loss for the organization. “This is our biggest event and without a lot of auction items it is not going to be very successful and it could jeopardize the shelter,” said Micki Page with the Jackson-Madison Co. Humane Society. Despite the loss of the auction items, event organizers said they plan to still hold the annual Fur Ball, Saturday, March 3 and 6:30 p.m. at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. Humane Society leaders hope the items can be replaced in time for the fundraiser.
