City Plans to File a Public Nuisance Action Against Karma
Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist said he wants Club Karma shut down and the bar’s owner banned from getting another beer license. “It has been a recurring problem in downtown Jackson. We’ve been watching them for close to a year” said Mayor Jerry Gist. He said the city is taking a look at its procedure for monitoring clubs. “What we’re looking for now is enough evidence to bring some of the thugs into trial.” The mayor said Sunday morning’s incident should send a message to property owners, club promoters and the bar’s owner, Jerry Gardener. “Well, I think the possibility of him getting another beer permit for Jackson, Tennessee is fairly remote,” he said. Authorities said 18 people sustained gunshot wounds, Sunday. They said college student LeCarlos Todd, 19, was fatally shot. Fire Marshal Wayne Arnold said although he did not visit the club the night of the incident, he does not believe it was over its capacity of 260 people. The mayor said otherwise. “I’m thinking he had more than 260 people there that night,” said Mayor Gist. The mayor said along with the number of patrons in the club at the time of the incident he will have Jackson Police Department compile a list of disturbance calls to the establishment. “It may be fights or arguments that take place in the establishments, but that’s part of the process,” he said. He said along with Club Karma, he will likely include other businesses which may be a nuisance in the community. “If we feel like the history justifies them being part of the nuisance process then we’re going to include them,” he said. The mayor said he hopes to approach a chancery judge before the end of the week with the nuisance action.
