Students React To Deadly Club Shooting
Friends of the man killed in Sunday morning’s shooting at a downtown night club are speaking out. Friends of Lecarlos Todd, 19, are both saddened and shocked that he was fatally wounded at Karma Lounge early Sunday morning. “It still hasn’t set in,” said freshman Lane student Sean McCaskill, a friend of Todd’s. “Still hasn’t, because he was a good guy, didn’t have any problems with anybody. He’d help you if he could. Just one of those guys you would like to know.” And 19 more victims were either shot or trampled at the club that same morning. According to Jackson police, of those injured, three were from Jackson and four were from Memphis. The rest were students at either Lemoyne-Owen College or Lane College. Friends told 7 Eyewitness News, Todd was a good person, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. “He was a pretty funny person,” said Lane freshman Areyonne Young. “He always told jokes. He always kept everybody’s head up.” Both Young and McCaskill lived in the same building as Todd. They said they are glad they did not go to Karma with some of their classmates for the post-game party. “It was like something told all of us just not to go,” Young said. Jackson resident Daneisha Hicks was at the club during the shooting, and said she is amazed she was able to escape unharmed. “All I can say is I’m blessed to be here today, I really am, ’cause it was not the type of situation that you would want to be in, anyway,” Hicks said. Officials from Lemoyne-Owen College e-mailed a statement to 7 Eyewitness News, which said that even though the party at Karma was not a college-sponsored event, they said student safety is paramount on campus and off. They said to their knowledge, none of their students was involved in the incident. 7 Eyewitness News tried to get a statement from Lane College, but President Wesley McClure could not be reached for comment.
