Controvery Brewing Over Statements Allegedly Made by Principal

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The American Civil Liberties Union is asking Haywood County school officials to let students know they have a right to identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual. The ACLU sent a letter to Superintendent Marlon King after students contacted the group saying a high school principal had threatened to expel gay students who showed affection for someone of the same sex. According to a news release from the ACLU, Haywood High School Principal Dorothy Bond also said that gay students were “not on God’s path” and were “ruining their lives.” Messages for King and Bond were not immediately returned. The ACLU says Bond also has incorporated prayers and proselytizing into school events. And it says she once told a lesbian student that she would go to hell.
