Dogs Okayed For Bears In KY
Hunters will be permitted to chase black bears with dogs in Kentucky but not shoot them when bayed.
The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission voted down a proposal Friday to allow houndsmen to kill bears. But commissioners voted to allow houndsmen to chase bears with dogs from Dec. 17 to 23.
Kentucky Houndsmen Association Political Action Committee Chairman Doug Morgan says he’s disappointed the commission struck down the proposal to allow hunters to shoot bayed bears. But Morgan said getting approval for the chase season was a reasonable compromise that can be built on in coming years.
The Humane Society of the United States criticized chasing bears with hounds as inhumane and shooting them afterward as unthinkable.
Hunters without dogs can still shoot bears during a three-day season in December.
