School System to Offer Cyber Tips to Parents
One West Tennessee School System wants to raise awareness and reduce risk when it comes to students using social networking sites. Students and counselors we spoke with at Lexington High School tell us they think many parents aren’t educated enough on what their kids are doing in cyber space. That’s why the Henderson County School System is putting on two forums addressing all the issues of online safety. All of the students we asked say they get on their social media site at least once a day. The female students we spoke with each said they have been contacted online before by men they don’t know. Counselor Danny Beecham says there are also many harmful sites out there directed towards teenagers that parents may not be aware of. “There are groups dealing with eating disorders that actually encourage it. You can find sites that encourage students towards suicide,” said Beecham. The free online safety classes are available to all Henderson County parents Thursday, March 1 at Scotts Hill High School at 6:00 pm, and again at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lexington High School.
