Sommet Group Executives Indicted

Three former top executives at Franklin-based Sommet Group, a once prominent collection of companies that used to have the naming rights to Nashville’s downtown arena, are facing federal charges that accuse them of a multi-million-dollar fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s office announced Friday that a federal grand jury had charged Brian Whitfield, Marsha Whitfield and D. Edwin Todd with conspiracy, fraud and tax charges.

The former executives at the now-defunct group, which provided payroll and other services to small businesses, are accused of enriching themselves at the expense of clients.

The government says the money was supposed to pay federal taxes, fund 401 K plans and pay medical and prescription drug benefits of employees who worked for the Sommet Group’s clients.
